GCC Code
Ratified by the UAE Government in 2013, the GCC Code has become a major mechanism for locally operating non-conventional ships to comply with relevant international maritime standards. The Code was transformed into a fully functioning safety verification method in the UAE after TASNEEF took the initiative to implement the regulations on behalf of the Federal Transport Authority (FTA). Accordingly, TASNEEF developed the interpretations, checklists, and operating system.
TASNEEF has also organised workshops across the region, where local ship operators had the opportunity to understand the importance of the code and the specific requirements they need to comply with in order to continue their operations in a safer and more reliable marine environment.
The implementation of this code by TASNEEF has contributed significantly to raising safety standards for the applicable ships in order to safeguard life, assets, and the environment.
From 1st September 2014, the GCC Code became mandatory for all ships operating in UAE waters as follows:
Passenger ships with an overall length of 12 m ≤ L < 24 m and carrying less than 200 passengers.
All other ships with an overall length of L ≥ 12 m.
GCC Safety Regulations for Non-Conventional Ships
With regard to the implementation of Cabinet Resolution No. "29" of 2013 concerning the safety regulations for non-conventional ships that are not covered by the International Convention (GCC Code):
As the national classification society of the UAE, and as per the MOU signed between TASNEEF and the Federal Transport Authority – Land & Maritime, TASNEEF carries out the technical surveys and issues the relevant certificates stipulated under the GCC Code to ensure compliance with Cabinet Resolution No. "29" of 2013.
Registration under the UAE flag and the issuing or renewal of navigation licenses require obtaining the accredited certificates approved by the UAE Cabinet.
